Pure voices was born out of an invitation to the 2024 Venice Biennale, the theme of which was absolute music. My research led me to discover two pieces by Latvian composer Santa Ratniece, who deploys an astonishing palette of sonorities in her treatment of voices. I also wanted to highlight her Lithuanian colleague Justė Janulytė and her electro-acoustic work on light, an explicit homage to the writing of György Ligeti. Finally, the mystical light of Arvo Pärt came to the fore.
In Pure Voices, the physical presence of the singers tends to disappear. It gives way to the vibration of the voices alone, which, magnified by the musical composition, conjure up a wilderness, the diffractions of the celestial vault and the hope of a divine possibility.
